Can you imagine jellyfish sea creatures gently floating in the ocean currents searching for tiny aquatic life forms? It would seem a dance of the jellyfish as they bob, dance and twirl around. We have access to a wonderful aquarium in Duluth, Minnesota where I can view and take photos of the jellyfish under special colored lights. I love the colors, the iridescence, the movement and the featured colors of green, dark blues, rich oranges and golds. 30 x 22 inches.

October 2020 is just around the corner

September 29th, 2020

October 2020 is just around the corner

Winter Fishermen trundle home, off of the frozen lake. Why are they all bundled up? The gear protects them from the wind and cold temperatures when outside in Minnesota winters. Supplies, portable fish houses and fresh-caught fish are stored on the sleds being pulled. Because the sun gives no warmth at this time of the day, the mufflers get moist and covered with frost. The figures are out-lined from the strong sunlight at the end of day behind them and do cast long shadows on the snow in front of them. Complementary colors of orange and degrees of blue and darks, really make this watercolor painting sing.

I just received news that this painting was chosen for inclusion into the 2020 NorthStar Watercolor Society National Fine Art Exhibition this October - November 2020. We take it to the display library site tomorrow, 9/30/2020. Wish me luck! Kathy

Life is moving along and I, Kathy Braud, am so grateful for my interest and joy in painting.
I have developed a series of watercolor paintings that add color and joy to my life, whenever I revisit them.
It is surprising what carries us along in the direction we seek and also what shuts us off.
I am wishing all of you happy sailing along your course of life. Kathy Braud.
Also -- Be aware, I have a large selection of paintings at home, many are not on FAA. I have painted for a long time.....

2019 Fall Kathy Braud Update

October 7th, 2019

Hi there! I Hope you have enjoyed my website.
Life has been busy of late here in Little Falls, MN. Art opportunities happened here with the Little Falls Arts and Crafts Fair in early September and ~ 100,000 people that show up. My display was accessible to the public at the Shoppes of Little Falls, which has 60 some venders inside this wonderful store year round.
I attended a wonderful Paint Out in the Wisconsin wild areas at a special camp where we can interact and enjoy other artists, learn from each other, paint inside a lovely hall or paint en plaine aire, and we have good sleeping and eating while there this fall.
My Central Minnesota Watercolor group hosted a workshop by Jennifer Stone, from South Dakota, at the Paramount Arts Center in St. Cloud, MN. We worked on learning the new concepts of watercolor, mixed media and collage that she teaches. We had a great time! And I learned a lot. Some new works of mine will be showing up on FAA soon.
Yes, my art was accepted!!! Into this years’ 2019 Red River Watercolor Society National Exhibition held at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, MN. as an exhibition over the summer. It is home now and this new art, Ruffled Feathers 5, 22 x 30 image, is also on my FAA website.
This fall, another wonderful new piece of mine, was chosen to be on display at the 2019 Fifth Annual NorthStar National Watermedia Juried Exhibition. It is currently on display at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, in Lakeville, MN from Oct 3 – Nov 14, 2019. This piece is also full sized. I do have signature status in both national societies.
Have a great autumn and enjoy the colors! And Remember, paintings keep their color all year round!

Enjoying the Paint Out

October 1st, 2018

I belong to a wonderful group of artist folks who come together once a year for a Paint Out. We book a bible camp facility a year ahead and come use the camp when the kids have gone back to school. The artists’ enjoy the get together of wonderful meals we do not have to cook. And we spend social time together. Indoor cabin rooms provide for rest. You bring your own bedding and pillows, etc.
As a group we each easily paint 8 hours or more. Those who want to paint in plaine aire have many options of local parks, roadways, lakes and farmlands to enjoy. Those of us who wish to stay inside, out of the weather, make the most of a great hall with wonderful light and tables. We are so fortunate to be able to share our artistic talents together and sometimes even learn new art making methods .
Consider a “paint out†experience as a wonderful possibility! You might be surprised how enjoyable it is.

A joyous painting of light beams and color peek through the trees and enliven the branches. Colorful shadows spread out from the trees line in a wonderful park along the Mississippi River in Central Minnesota. I named this joyful, flowing scene of dancing color because it was constructed at Easter time and reminded me of our Creator's love.

Art in Healing - Kathy Braud, a participant, with CentraCare Health Long Prairie Hospital

December 13th, 2017

I had a wonderful evening out tonight! Jim and I attended the “Art in Healing†event at CentraCare Health, Long Prairie, MN. Wed. Dec. 13, 2017. They had an open house event and a lovely gathering to celebrate the opening of their new hospital and clinic. And this display included MY paintings!
Visitors, Artists and Poets came together to celebrate the planned beautiful artworks that is spread out throughout the campus. Tours were hosted, poets did a reading of their own words displayed on the wall. Photographers had wonderful photographs presented of beautiful landscapes, the Long Prairie River, farm land and barns, skyscapes, florals and so much more.
A grouping of three made-to-be-square Kathy Braud floral prints were prominently displayed together. Two large rectangular landscapes of mine were displayed in another area. I was impressed! New print technology with Art Partners was able to increase one of paintings with a paper size of 11†x 15†to 3 feet X 4 feet and applied to foam core. Mats were not needed as borders were provided. Glass still provides a barrier from the elements.

Seasons in the Sun exhibit celebrated by Kathy Braud and Kerry Kupferschmidt

Link to Facebook regarding Kathy Braud Art Show, Nov – Dec 2017

Kathy Braud took digital photos of "Seasons in the Sun" and spent Thanksgiving holiday evenings photo-shopping a joint original watercolor exhibition with Kerry Kupferschmidt.

A large display of art that is hanging on the tall walls in the Main Gallery, and our Great River Arts staff did a great job of showcasing our works.
Since we live in a more rural area of the state of Minnesota, I felt we needed to promote the images somehow. Do visit this photo collection of images displaying a large variety of my artworks in this setting.

I did figure out how to upload multiple images of painting postings to Facebook.
Do you get a feeling for how the original watercolor framed and matted pieces will look on a wall. Click on my photo images to enlarge.

Research - use posted FAA images so can visually fill in the complexity of the images (without shadows / reflections interfering) with color, line and composition. And one has an opportunity for choosing a print at FAA also.

New Mississippi River Painting on display by Kathy Braud RRWS

New Mississippi River Painting on display by Kathy Braud RRWS

https://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-best-dam-town-in-minnesota-kathy-braud.html ...... to see the larger image......

Hi dear visitor, This new Mississippi River painting, called "The Best Dam Town in Minnesota", celebrates the peaceful view of the city from near the dam flood gates and water retaining area that is very unique for Little Falls, MN. The art currently is on display at the Great River Arts in downtown Little Falls for the months of November and December 2017 where I am also having a large exhibition of my colorful artworks ( ~40) , some new and some have been posted on FAA already. You are invited to experience my art in person, if you would like.
A bridge crosses within a block of this area also ( see the far left).
This particular site is not a common place to take a photo, I had to climb up by the railroad tracks where trains do go by about every 10 minutes some days. The river was so calm and the clouds overhead reflected the beauty of the impending colorful sunset. My panorama view used half a full sheet of watercolor paper split the long way. I discovered how the town is designed as I manipulated this new long format to create my landscape.

The right side of the river in 1803 was part of the United States ( as you face the town in the image) and the left side ( not pictured) was part of the Louisiana Purchase. 100 years later in 1903, this city of Little Falls was booming with many businesses, and timber floating down the river, sawmills, papermill, creamery's, a railroad, electric station ( is pictured here) and had so many activities and people who lived here
.
Now another 100 years later, we still appreciate our heritage. Some of the past businesses are gone with the changes of time but the dam system is still very important for controlling the water levels and providing the opportunity for making electricity. Today, as I write this note, the water is really traveling fast and really running over the dam. We have had a lot of rain this fall and the Mississippi River is a recipient of water collection in the state of Minnesota.
Wishing you the BEST! Visit us someday when you are traveling to Minnesota.

The latest - 2017 activities

October 27th, 2017

Wow! I am really busy these last weeks!

I just got back from a lovely art retreat at a church camp out of state that was so fantastic! As it is a place to make art, renew friendships with other artists and have a break in time to do our own thing and grow.
I did get a lot done, enjoyed the camaraderie of problem solving together with other artists with our own artworks or theirs, and enjoyed seeing the variety of mediums being used and applied to create art around me.

Now I am back in the real world.

A reception, is coming up tomorrow, Sat 10/28/17 for my Central MInnesota Watercolorists group in Little Falls, MN. at Great River Arts. Little Falls, MN
I am also displaying my art in Sprout Marketplace in Little Falls also, this whole same day. But I have also arranged for way to attend the reception and have friend coverage at my Sprout booth so I can also attend the reception;. A big thank you for this!

My joint watercolor artworks display with Kerry Kupferschmidt will take place very soon - and will be up for the months of November and December 2017. We are delivering our artworks to the GRA Center around Nov 1 and the staff will hang the exhibit for us. So nice! Each of us will have approximately 38 - 40 pieces on display.
This is a wonderful space to show art in this gallery, as it has large tall walls, many UV lights and is so special! The community will also have several dinner theater opportunities to view our art while it is up for view.
Thank you, dear reader, for your visit to my site and the blog. May you also have a great day today! yours in art, Kathy

Artist Market Demo on YES Canvas by Kathy Braud

May 23rd, 2017

Artist Market Demo on YES Canvas by Kathy Braud

5/19/2017 I am Kathy Braud RRWS, a Central Minnesota watercolor artist. I have enjoyed my journey of creating art, exhibitions, juried art shows, art fairs, sales and do have a worldwide presence on the web with Fine Arts America. Many workshops has yielded me instruction to understand how to make a better painting, paying attention to important details of line, color, shape and the principles of design. I choose to make value studies, focus on light, middle and dark values and interlocking shapes. The sharp contrast of dark values against the path of light do make my paintings very bold and dramatic. Even arranging different colors together can produce exciting mood changes. I feel my function as a painter goes beyond recording an event with the accuracy of a camera, but instead, feel I am capturing a mood, memory, or am describing a pleasure which enriches my spirit. One of my goals in my paintings is to have fun, be enthusiastic and share this impression with you. www.kathy-braud.artistwebsites.com

A photo of me, see attached - standing near my art display in the Fine Art Building, MN State Fairgrounds!
How did I started?

I have always enjoyed art, even as I went about becoming a nurse. When my oldest child left the nest, I filled the hole, took a long workshop and fell in love with watercolor. Since then I try to take at least one workshop per year and enjoy attending the NSWS demo’s available to us.

A description plan of my demo -
I plan to use the new YES canvas, with a surface like hot press paper to paint on. I will use watercolor media to paint a colorful floral painting and explore and manipulate this new surface. I had a Showy Lady Slipper to show visitors.
After the demo is at home, coats of acrylic clear coat will be added to protect the canvas after the painting is finished. The art painted on the YES canvas can be hung with a wire without additional framing. I am eagerly awaiting painting on the canvases so I can have playtime!

Artist Paintout 2016

September 23rd, 2016

Hello! Greetings! I am home now from a long paint-out week in Amory, WI with a large group of artists. We totally enjoyed the ammenities of Camp Wapagasset - great food and dining hall, social opportuities, great dormitory areas and large painting area. And for the ones who like to paint en plaine aire - lots of great scenery! The leaves started to fall while we were there too!

It is so nice to have social and informal time to also connect with our friends while they work on their favorite art work. Sometimes it is a "hang out and learn!"

I am grateful to my many art friends who gathered from far and near places so they could attend this time together and be nourished. Kathy

Kathy Braud late Spring and Summer Activities 2016

Kathy Braud late Spring and Summer Activities 2016

Kathy Braud late Spring and Summer Activities 2016
I had a watercolor display and sale of original watermedia art at the NorthStar Watermedia Society’s Artist Market. This 2 day event was held at the Fine Art Building at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. This year, I was chosen to be a demo artist under the big mirror. This is always an experience!
Over the summer, my watercolor group, Central Minnesota Watercolorists, lined up a variety of group exhibitions in St Cloud, MN. We displayed art at CentraCare Health Center, St. Cloud Hospital, Great River Regional Library and now are exhibiting at the Paramount Art Center till September 26.
I am also exhibiting at the Whitney Senior Center until the end of September.
Great River Art Center in Little Falls displayed a nice amount of my medium sized framed works for a month in their Gift Gallery.
Crosslake Art Club hosted a wonderful co-operative venture in the lakes region north of my home. Their art group put on the 32nd Art Show of original art for sale. Gift gallery works included some small prints and cards. It was delightful and so interesting to see the variety of art on display. I had the opportunity to display a great variety of new card images that are not on my FAA site.
The Shoppes of Little Falls is a great new business venture in our city. It is a pop up business in a newly remodeled century old brick building. After hours of construction and volunteer labor, the owners were able to adapt this 8000 sq.ft. building to become a large lovely room with high ceilings of tin type metal and colorful paint décor on the walls. I am one of the many vendors sharing this large open space. We have one employee and many vendor volunteer hours that helpers donate to this endeavor. We are making this former empty building in our downtown to be interesting and accessible to tourists and our community. Soon the Arts and Crafts Fair coming up the second weekend of September will bring about 100,000 people to Little Falls, MN. We are also hoping they will come off the street and join us in the coolness of our store.
Sprout Market is new and growing in our community. It is a grouping of food and non- food venders displaying their wares in an indoor market at the Crestliner Warehouse, 13th St. NE, Little Falls. Attendance is free to visitors, is a destination event and a place where one can see wool being spun, candies, art, jewelry, wood work, live music, garden, frozen meat and baked foods to name a few. The August 20, 2016 event is open 10 am – 4 pm. Your presence is welcome!
The Red River Watercolor Society National Watermedia Show in Fargo, ND is over at the Plaines Art Museum September 4. It is a beautiful show and so full of lovely artwork.

Kathy Braud Attended an Andy Evansen Watercolor Workshop

November 6th, 2015

Art Prints What a wonderful opportunity for me, Kathy Braud!

I was able to attend a 3 day November 2015 watercolor workshop with artist, Andy Evansen, hosted by Minnesota Watercolor Society (MWS). We came together to learn - from as far away at Ely and Little Falls, to artists who live near in the suburbs and twin cities. We gathered in a lovely art meeting room at the Ames Center of Art, Burnsville, MN.
Andy is a master at en plaine aire painting and showed us technique and ease and timing of painting. I just loved the colorful demos, value studies, and how layering the colors and value can made the subject come alive in just 3 simple layers.
Our understanding of making a popping good painting was greatly improved by the end of the class. Fellowship, another reward of engaging in a workshop, includes spending time rubbing elbows with fellow artists - so different then our usual solitary painting experiences at home.
May your future include a demo or workshop! It is so worth the experience.

I am also participating in the Minnesota Watercolor Society (MWS) 2015 Fall Member Show called "Brilliant Passages" of original paintings on display at the Ames Center of Art. This exhibition will be on display Nov 5 - Dec 11, 2015 with an award ceremony on Nov 6, 6 pm - 8:30pm.
My submission is the brilliant watercolor "Pansies in Crystal Vase".

The Cross Lake Art Club, gathering together in the small Minnesota town of Cross Lake in mid June 2015.
We gathered to learn new pointers for painting portraiture, small abstracts suitable for jewelry and birch tree landscapes from a great artist and teacher, Pat Undis, from Ramsey, MN.
We all grew with the experience!
The Community Center took good care of us with delicious meals in the same building.

I am now a new member of this group and will participate in events that they promote. They are ramping up for a big show and sale on Labor Day weekend and offer the guests a great assortment of work and actual painting demo's on site.
My home is approximately 60 some miles south but artists do get around! and Art groups are worth traveling for......

Kathy Braud attended a Lian Quam Zhen workshop

June 20th, 2015

It has been a great week! Our Central Minnesota Watercolorists club partnered with the Paramount Arts Center in St. Cloud, MN to bring the artist Lian Quam Zhen to give a 4 day watercolor workshop.
He was great! Lian uses a special camera that can bring the image much closer or move out so the whole painting shows..... and the images of what he is demonstrating is shown to us on a big television screen.
We progressed in stages and worked on blue heron landscapes, koi fish underwater scenes and peony floral arrangements.

We all knew ahead of time that Lian talks with his paint brush, so we were able to view the pile of paintings gathered of questions or problems - be answered successfully with color, value, pattern, light or dark. We also discovered our problems can be seen from a distance and it is good to contemplate the painting for awhile, then jump in and do it!.

Lian also had us use just 3 colors of paint and we mixed all our colors from them. Some were made as pure liquid colors in little cups to pour into our paintings and other places needed a thicker paste of color and mixing, and we needed to keep the pure ones separate. The color Black was encouraged also... by mixing!

Since we are a far flung group, we had fun in fellowship, had a large group dinner out, and found other opportunities to visit in small groups during lunch and get to know each other better.

I highly encourage artists to take art workshops. Regional artists will cost less then nationally known ones who teach more frequently, but they all teach you important lessons that help you jump start to a higher level of expertise. Unique time saving processes and thoughts about art are freely shared / discussed. Your energy thrown into the mix will stir you to improve your current painting pathway and excitement to paint.

This watermedia exhibit is by three artists who love to paint the nuances and spirit of the Minnesota's landscapes, flowers and animals.

Kathy Braud, Kerry Kupferschmidt and Dan Mondloch all paint in watermedia (watercolor, gouache and acrylics), but they all have distinctly different styles and approaches. All three are members of the Central Minnesota Watercolorists group in St. Cloud MN. Hope you can come visit this beautiful display and see what brings these longtime painters together, what makes each of their work unique, and learn about what inspires them to paint. Each artist has been able to display a large assortment of new works and the presentation is very nice.

Dan gave a wonderful landscape demo during the opening reception. Our art work is very similar in colors and style but each artists' work is very unique.

Fall Art Activities for Kathy Braud

October 26th, 2014

Here is a comment from a group administrator which I received today on this lovely new watercolor I had added to my site, Waterlilies in Shadow.

"Incredible artwork Kathy! At first I thought this was a photo with digital effects and then I looked at your description and was gobsmacked to see that this is a watercolour and gouache artwork! I can feel the water in this and the whole effect for me is as if I'm standing at the edge of a lily pond/river/creek area and feel calmed and blissed out by this wonderful view of the natural world. Well done is an understatement here! f/l/t/f "

June 7, 2014 Chippewa Falls Schoolhouse had an opening reception. Twelve pieces of art were bought with a grant to be permanent pieces in the beautifully restored country school. Richard Grella interviews some of the artists which recall country school and describe their artwork.

I have a painting included in this collection and chatted about 6th grade recollections of my country school, and my husband and grand-daughter were photographed sitting on an old bench in the entry waiting for me and looking sooooo cute!
Interesting story of this school and others that were mentioned.
In case you don't know how to make the link work..... click on control and the line at once... and it will open and play. Nice music too.... old fashioned... like us. It might have to be taken out of FAA to work.... didn't work for me either on here.

October 12, 2014 Sontes Art Reception for Fall Winter Exhibition

October 16th, 2014

Sell Art Online Reflections in Color will be on site.

We had a great reception at Sontes.... with Tessa, Fred and Francie. They treated the artists so nice. The tapas were great! and served with Champaign. Enjoyed visiting with artists and guests - what a fun way to spend an afternoon. My husband and I made this an occasion to take a get-away trip from our normal lives and see the beautiful countryside. It was spectacular!

You are Invited! Come to the Sontes Fall / Winter Exhibit - Art Reception!
4- 3rd St. SW, Rochester, MN
2 – 5 pm Sunday, October 12, 2014
I am one of the eleven artists who will be displaying their 2D and 3D art. The variety of color, style, and mediums is exciting! Get a chance to visit with the artists. This event is being held in a historic building with tall walls, exceptional food and has a special wine bar.
Sontes is a large fine dining restaurant located in downtown Rochester about 1.5 blocks from the Mayo Clinic.
International & USA travelers, businessmen, Mayo Clinic professionals and Rochester residents enjoy the facility. Meetings are held there for organizations. It has great comfortable seating.
Sontes are usually closed on Sunday, so the whole place will be open to the free reception festivities and viewing of the art and they can accommodate a large turnout.

Check the internet for more info, address and directions. It is easy to find off the freeway.
Can you help move this invite around so people who might like to come would be aware of the festivity? Wouldn’t that be a treat!

September Art Activities 2014

October 4th, 2014

September Art Activities 2014

A busy month is planned in September. I taught a 2 day watercolor workshop for the Brush and Palette Art Club in Alexandria, MN.
- first day was a class in watercolor and then use of the Elegent Writer Pen on the second day in a variety of methods.
It went well, I was happy and so were the participants. They took good care of me!

Tomorrow, I leave for a 5 day annual paint out in the 3rd week of September with a group of artists arriving from Minnesota and Wisconsin.
It has swelled to 36 participants this year, men and women, and many are very capable teachers of workshops themselves. We gather at an environmental camp somewhere convenient to a majority of the folks and then move the location around the state. This photo shows the lovely spacious work center we enjoyed at Camp Wapogasset Lutheran Camp. Many of the group enjoyed the rivers, lake scenes and beautiful leaves and painted en plaine aire.

I always feel like I need to take a lot of my art supplies along - even the kitchen sink! (not really!) but as I see someone else doing something new.... I have some of the supplies along to try it out also. Art stores are never very close.
3 meals a day and a nice facility for sleeping, eating and working is offered at great group rates.
Check it out on the internet for your state of residence. You will be surprised at the good rates available for groups.

I am preparing for many options for display this fall 2014.
Sontes, a fine dining restaurant in Rochester, MN has chosen to feature my work in their upcoming fall and winter art display (for about 6 months). I will deliver paintings there by October 1st. The free reception to celebrate the art show is planned for October 12 afternoon and it is a sight to behold!
The City of St Cloud is encouraging an outpouring of art this fall to be displayed ito the community via the Government buildings, the Paramount Art Center and The Rivers Edge Convention Center, who are all hosting large groupings of art.
Besides displaying in these venues, I will also be displaying on the Clemens East exhibition wall at the Whitney Senior Center, St. Cloud, MN for October and November 2014. I will also have another wall there November and December 2014.
As juried art shows and member shows come along of my art organizations this fall, I plan to participate.

I am working in watermedia now besides watercolor! It is sooooooo fun! But I need to use the garage for when I am applying the acrylic so I don't hurt my kitchen. Watercolor is more forgiving in it's application and clean up.

This painting is already framed most beautifully in square format and the plastic is still on the edges for protection. I anticipate I will display it at the Sizzlilng Summer Art Crawl happening in a couple of weeks in Downtown St Cloud, MN located 30 some miles from us. I will be displaying with my Central Minnesota Watercolor group at the Falcon Bank Atrium, August 22, 2014 4 - 9 pm
FYI - the custom framing price was $250.00 and is approximately 30 x 30 in. framed.

I am enjoying this painting in our living room now, for whenever I might sit down for a change of pace. It gleams with color and is so transparent yet has those textured areas. Beautiful! As if the light is shining through it.

The rest of the story.......

Well, the Sizzling Summer Art Crawl is over. My Central Minnesota Watercolorists group, CMW, had use of the entire ground floor of the Falcon Bank Atrium. The CMW art crawl crew divided up the space and I was given a lovely chunk of floor space to contain my large assortment of work. I displayed on artist screens, 3 stands, the window spaces for full sized paintings and a ledge. Lots of people visited our exhibition, on display from 1 pm - 9 pm. I had some great friends who assisted me with set up and take down, so I would be able to participate.
Folks seemed to enjoy my new style of watermedia painting. I heard good comments about Dandy Puff and Fall Floral Sweetness from many. Both are on display here at FAA.

Creative Community Canvas Project and Kathy Braud

August 18th, 2014

Creative Community Canvas Project and Kathy Braud

August 1 - September 1 is the Creative Community Canvas Project in Aitkin, MN 56431 This exhibit is a vast collection of 8 x 8 stretched canvases. They are to be your own original painting displayed on the gallery walls like a giant tapestry but the colors and topic is entirely your own creation.

A reception was held along with a festival and a Riverboat Days Parade in this smaller Northern Minnesota town. Such a variety of topics, colors, mediums, and abilities of wonderful creations.
Wall Quilts of color ( 8x8 canvases) were displayed together throughout the entire gallery and voting for Peoples Choice made it fun to look around.

I added a photo of myself and my painting hanging on the wall. It is white and red, and is made of a combination layer of modeling paste (white) and red watercolor.
It looks like a jacket over a white shirt. I figured there would be many colorful canvases, so mine would be the quiet block between them.

Artist Kathy Brauds Painting Chosen for Schoolhouse Art Exhibit Purchase Award

May 27th, 2014

Artist Kathy Brauds Painting Chosen for Schoolhouse Art Exhibit Purchase Award

Artist Kathy Braud’s Painting Chosen for Schoolhouse Art Exhibit Purchase Award

Kathy Braud’s watermedia entry, Schoolhouse Art, submitted to an art contest in Central Minnesota, was chosen as one of 12 purchase awards to become a part of the permanent art collection at the restored 1906 Chippewa Falls Schoolhouse Exhibit.

Artist Reception and Exhibit Opening is scheduled for June 7, 2014 at 1 pm. The schoolhouse is located on Summit Drive next to the Church.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Terrace Mill Foundation, 27165 Old Mill Pond Road, Terrace, MN – with preparations being made to preserve the history of one room schoolhouses in Minnesota.

Audio recordings of history, interviews with former teachers and students, and with judges and artists will be collected with delivery of artwork for the exhibit and will be used as a part of the permanent collection in the school. A CD Production of the history should be completed by June 21, 2014.

This exhibit activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Lake Region Arts Council, thanks to the legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Reference photos were taken this past summer 2013 by Braud at the Morrison County Fairgrounds, near Little Falls, MN. This is where the rural one room schoolhouse is now located after being moved there from a northern township in the county.
District #1 Schoolhouse was open to the public during fair time, with docents in the building and has an active rural schoolteacher influence still in the community. Kathy chose to design her painting with an indoor classroom scene filled with students setting in their connected wooden desks.

Kathy Braud, who attended a rural school through 6th grade, is looking forward to an interview. She says we really got to know the kids, parents and grandparents who attended school events. Kathy also has a precious memory resource in the form of a scrapbook made yearly by one of her teachers and cared for by her family.

Recess - There were children also having fun riding an unusual old merry-go-round outside in the yard at the fairgrounds - one that you stood up on and the ride was really fast!

We are moving along in Winter 2014!
The Imagine Color show is over at GRAA with the CMW artists on March 1, 2014. I had 2 paintings included.

March 2, Today I de-installed the @Kathy Braud Artwork at the Cloquet Rotating Art Show at Memorial Hospital in Cloquet, MN.
It had been very well received and looked very nice on the large open dining room walls. The paintings reflected all seasons of the year.

This past week had featured an open house to the local Cloquet community to celebrate their completion of a large remodeling project within the hospital complex. Wonderful artworks had also been purchased as part of this building project to present a wonderful ambience of art within the corridors.

"Invitational 43" is the latest exhibition on my art activities palette.
It is curated by John Charles Cox, Instructor of Visual Art and Art History and curator of the Permanent Collection and Charles Beck/Waage Galleries.

Today, I and my husband made the painting delivery trip to M|State - Fergus Falls, MN, about 100 miles away from our home town.
I have participated for many years in this art event at the Charles Beck/Waage Galleries at the Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M|State) Fergus Falls Campus. We visit family as we come through the area.
We had interesting weather today as the snow blew across the highway and made areas of slippery ice 2 - 3 inches deep on East/West roads.

The exhibition will run March 7 - 29, 2014
with a reception March 29 from 11 am - 1 pm - taking place before we take our paintings home.
Each artist could submit one painting and I chose "Egrets in Red 2" - a framed 36 x 28 watercolor which can be seen in my FAA gallery.
Over the past years, I was fortunate to receive 2 Merit Awards and a Purchase Award for my watercolor / watermedia submissions to this exhibition.

3-23-2014
A new exhibit opportunity is emerging for my Ten Brushes art critique group. (10 women artists)
We will be able to display our art at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Downtown Minneapolis, MN in the Red Skyway, I facilitated the contact and am working with our group to fit the tight time lines for submission and delivery.
Our show is named BrushWorks: approaches to works in watermedia and will be on display April 4 - June 26, 2014.

Kathy Braud has placed new work on FAA

February 28th, 2014

Art Prints

Placed on FAA today 2-24-2014 I needed a color fix, I guess. Too much white outside.
We checked our cold water faucet temp in the bathroom and it registered 32 degrees at noon today. The city had been warning us that pipes were freezing and braking. People then have no water, washing, bathing or bathroom facilities. So, we have now been letting the faucet run a small stream of water continually. Had to buy a thermometer that goes down the Fahrenheit scale to below zero temps. Stay warm and safe in this long winter season.

Art Prints

This floral in a vase, July Summer Arrangement, was placed on FAA yesterday, Feb 23,2014.
Just a lovely arrangement of lively, colorful flowers that looked so nice. Always fun to present the image we remember in a new way then just as a photograph. I had fun with the background!

2-27-2014
Today I have revamped my galleries! I added many new galleries and added paintings to them. Seems I had not been good about assigning a place for my images to land for you to see easily. Sorry!
Hopefully I have divided up the variety into bits and pieces that make it easy for you to poke around looking for your possible art interest.
The images sure are colorful and also .... so many more paintings were able to be displayed as gallery logos.

I entered a 12 x 12 Exhibition in the Franklin Arts Center Residents Artist Gallery, in Brainerd, MN. Tomorrow will deliver. This exhibit was open on an international level. My painting is an acrylic on thick gallery wrapped canvas 12 " x 12" with collage and I had picked a joyful floral scene.
The painting s $150 + tax Last year it won 4th prize in a judged mini show competition for NWS artists (Northstar Watermedia Society) having a food drive and raising money for the Food Bank. If I add it as a photo here, it will be yellow, orange and green leaves ( with poppies).

The show Imagine Color is coming down tomorrow at Great River Arts Gallery in Little Falls. How fast the month of February moves along even in this cold weather. I had a couple of bright paintings displayed with our Central Minnesota Watercolorists group exhibition. Opposites Attract and Fire Sky. Great display! 20 artists and about 40 pieces of art.

We will be picking up the Cloquet Rotating Art Show at the Cloquet Memorial Hospital Sunday. Cloquet, MN.
I hope they enjoyed!

Next week is delivery for the M-State - Fergus Falls Spring Art Exhibition. I just read the perspectus. Hummmmmm .... only One painting.
This exhibit will be about 100 miles from me and I have participated for years. We have family in the area and can enjoy a quick visit.
We have cruddy roads at the moment..... it is truly winter and they are located in the high wind area. Wish me well on my travels!

August 2013

Another summer month has arrived!

Today I finished a full sized watercolor and watercolor crayon painting. I had progressed to level two in a committee of prospects who want to have their art be chosen to be bought for display in a new hospital addition in Minnesota. I already knew they needed a larger size for display then my current painting. I have already spent some time preparing this beautiful 22 x 30 inch full sized painting. Hope they like it!

The Benton County Fair, in Sauk Rapids, is coming up this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Our CMW group will be talking to fair goers, doing demo's and showing off art and greeting cards on display on Friday and Saturday. We must be there 9 am on Friday to deliver the art and set up, 1:25 - 5:35 pm on Saturday is my time to participate, and back again on Sunday - 9 am to pick up the art before the grounds get full of people. Lots of races fill the grounds the evening before, so we wait till am to take down.

Got word that the selection process for the MN State Fair did not include a Kathy Braud original. The competition was fierce. Some of my friends were in round two and I heard that one of them had made the grade!

I am anticipating the Art Paintout in Lanesboro, MN. Coming up in a couple of weeks. Heard 38 artist people have signed up. I am practicing my painting and finding my supplies. Home will be a long ways away if I forget something.

Today is August 24, 2013 and I have amassed a lot of news to share!

I am back from the Paint Out in Lanesboro! It was a wonderful time of creating, sharing, learning, walking everywhere, good food, and we even included a lovely canoe trip down the Root River, MN. We had quite a rainstorm that passed thru and cut ravines in the roads and parking lots. We all enjoyed the extra time we spent hard at work making new art or finishing art with friends in the room to chat with on occassion. Critiques and sharing time also allowed us to understand new thoughts. I did try out en plaine aire painting, but I did not have the wonderful equipment needed to comfortably paint. I like studio painting better! ... so I did that the rest of the week - taking up as much room as I wanted!

Was part of a Supper Sizzling Art Crawl in St. Cloud, MN on Friday night with the Central Minnesota Watercolorists. Friends helped set up my booth and art and manned the area till I returned from my PaintOut trip. What a wonderful gift!
Art crawls do bring out a variety of folks to see creativeness. Falcon National Bank, St. Cloud, hosted us and we had a great turnout...... they even served wine & promoted a local wine industry.
I had made some new blank greeting cards of many of my works for this occasion ( approx. 80). Many are suitable for being framed "as is" - as they have a white border around them. I have a glossy appearance to the paintings and a matte, easy writing surface to the note area. I think some of my cards have make it to the refrigerator display area of recipients too!

My art did not get selected for purchase for the new Hospital addition in northern MN, as the decisions for choices was very competitive. But I suspect I have been added to their new rotating artist display selection.

One of my new paintings I have been working on this week is a landscapes of Lake Superior crashing into the rocks farther up the North Shore. So far I am impressed! I used a family of colors so the colors will go together well. This new painting might be shown in "Water Works" MNWS Fall Show 2013.
I also finished a new still life. And a little country church and cemetery landscape! That last one just glows! Used new techniques beyond watercolors.

June 2013

August 5th, 2013

Monday June 24, 2013
Just got back from a great one day workshop by Bonnie Cutts, a mixed media art instructor who demonstrates Golden Paints.
This workshop was about using acrylic mediums and paints used in watermedia paintings. Bonnie explained things in such a way that the average person can learn to navigate tackling these wonderful new products. We made reference material charts to use in the future that demonstrated how each gel, medium, and paint interacted. Most of us were excited about using one of the new mediums and we practiced on our canvas paintings.
My Ten Brushes art group had this class at the Studio 321, Northrup King Building, Northeast Minneapolis with @Lisa Fertig (her group studio).
I hope to add a photo of one of my creations to this blog soon.

I have just received news that two of my submissions were accepted into the statewide Minnesota, Marvel exhibition at the Franklin Arts Center, Residents Artist Gallery, Brainerd, MN. July 5 - July 27, 2013. I will post more info about this in my events notice soon.

The month is rolling on with art opportunities.

My Central Minnesota Watercolorist group hung a new month-long show (June) at the St. Cloud Hospital in a special hallway for art.
Art is on location to be viewed by all who pass through the corridor and it is for sale through the gift shop. I have one large still life floral on display.

Summertime in Minnesota is a new state-wide show in Little Falls at the Great River Arts Main Gallery. The show has been hung and will be up thru July 13. Two of my pieces have been juried into the exhibition. Reception is June 29 5-7 pm

I am gathering the info, finding suitable Minnesota themed pieces, and preparing to enter the ‘Minnesota, Marvel’
an upcoming Juried Art Show at the Franklin Arts Center Resident Artists Gallery in Brainerd, MN

Green Prairie Community Art Committee is Seeking Artwork for New Residence Hall, University of MN Morris - I'm gathering for that also. They want to buy art so have been painting suitable pieces.

David Rickert 25-Year Retrospective / Clearance, had his reception on Saturday. We are both part of the GRAA Visual Arts Committee and I filled a car with art loving folks and we went to Staples, MN to be supportive of Dave.

Call for Art - Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition 2013 - I hope they chose my art! Digital entries are screened first then selections are made.

I have a workshop coming up in a couple of weeks toward the end of the month - learning to use acrylic products that Golden Paints make - instructor Bonnie Cutts. My Ten Brushes group decided to work on abstract art. Many of us would like to be skilled in this cathegory of art making also.

July 2013

August 5th, 2013

It has been a busy month already!
My art club, Central Minnesota Watercolorists, has been busy. We took down a show that was displayed at the St. Cloud Hospital and on another day, hung a new show at the large regional Great River Library, St. Cloud, that will be up till August 16.

Locally, the Summer in Minnesota exhibition looks great in the Main Gallery at Great River Arts, Little Falls, MN. and will be displayed till July 13.
I have several pieces on display. They were the easy view background when Collective Unconsciousness performed some great music at the art center.

My work was accepted into a state-wide juried exhibition, Minnesota, Marvel, now on display at the Residents Gallery, Franklin Arts Center, Brainerd, MN. The show will be up July 5 - 31. We enjoyed the reception time to enjoy the art and visiting with other artists.

Well the show / sale is over.... lots of NWS volunteers helping to make this a success. I had a great time!
I came down to the cities and arrived mid afternoon Thursday to hang my art in my designated 9 x16 feet area on wooden white walls. We are blessed with great art lighting in this Fine Art Building (used for the MN State Fair). I had decided to sell mounted work and had some matted watercolor pieces. In my site we had 4 horizontal lines of work that would fit mostly 16 x 20 frames or smaller.... and 105 pieces + 1 framed floral back from a show.
A group of us gathered together to share supper at a local pub.... the food was great and so fun to visit with other artists and get to know each other.
The reception for the Northstar Watermedia Society was Thursday night and that time allowed artists to react to this grand exhibition and comment to each other on their art. Treats made it special too.

Friday - I attended 4 of the free demo's and learned so much. Katherine Salverda worked with creating mixed media paintings in the am and showed us the different ways to create texture, change the hue, design and add abstraction. The artists in the audience were fascinated.

Saturday - Rains were moving through the city / state and we had a safe rain-proof area to be in. And since it was too wet to do outside work for spring, it seemed to be bringing more art admirers to see our art. Great demo's to be had on Saturday also.

Sunday - early-afternoon folks realized the show would be over at 4 pm and poured in the doors. So much art to see and so little time! Pouring rain at times..... what a day! My work shift was from 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm and we concentrated on assisting with tearing down our imprint on the building, clean up, assisting individual artists with take down & check out. I had sales! Then I still had a 2 hour trip to get home afterwards ......
It was a good show! Hope you can come to see us next year!

Newspaper article written about Kathy Braud

May 13th, 2013

Newspaper article written about Kathy Braud

Little Falls artist making colorful ripples in the art world
Written by Nancy Leasman for the May 2013 issue of the Sr. Perspective

Kathy Braud remembers her moment of inspiration as well as the artist who inspired her to also become an artist. Angie Beaumont, a Little Falls artist and one who went to Kathy’s church, encouraged Kathy when she expressed her desire to paint like Angie.
An obstetrics nurse for 23 years, Kathy has gradually shifted her days from working with new mothers and their babies to experimenting with color and a variety of materials that produce that color. She wasn’t drawn to arrange flowers, fish in sunlit waters, ride carousel animals, or snowboard off cliffs, yet she has figuratively done all those things through her art. In order to paint flowers one studies flower arranging. To understand sunfish one must dip beneath the rippled surface and swim in their waters. To reproduce a carousel on paper one distinguishes between reality and fantasy and takes a circuitous route of minute color and brush decisions. In many ways, an artist lives vicariously yet Kathy has found that her art has taken her many places she wouldn’t have otherwise gone, and brought fascinating people, by way of the miracles of the internet, to her living room.
Kathy paints on her antique round kitchen table in one of the oldest homes in Little Falls. “I’m a solitary painter,” she said.
Situated across from the Pine Grove Zoo, the house is 120 years old and unlike many of its neighbors, has only had two owners: the family that built the home and the Brauds who purchased it from the last elderly member of that family.
Though her kitchen studio is bathed in indirect light from three directions, Kathy has found that a painter never has too much light. “I turn on every light I have,” she said. When her two boys were at home and she worked shifts at the hospital, she painted more at night. Now that the house is considered an empty nest and she’s officially retired from nursing, she paints during the sunlit hours. Working there also means she can stir up a quick meal to share with her husband, Jim, on his lunch break from Larson Boats.
Kathy discovered early on in her art career that, for her, learning from books had its limitations. Angie Beaumont loaned her a Watercolor Workshop book but it wasn’t long before Kathy needed some hands-on help. “A book doesn’t show in person what happens.” And what happens, particularly when working with watercolor, Kathy’s chosen medium, often isn’t exactly what the artist planned. Colors have a way of moving, blending and bleeding. The artist, like a cowboy on a horse, controls the cattle herd of colors as they race across the paper. Techniques, picked up along the trail ride, are the tools of control.
In the summer of 1994, Rose Edin offered a week long workshop class and Kathy quickly signed up. She hasn’t stopped exploring through demos, workshops, learning about new tools, techniques and styles since then. And gradually, she has shifted from student to teacher.
“I liked Rose Edin’s bright wonderful colors,” said Kathy, and that appreciation for color is apparent in her work. “Lately, I’ve been bringing those darks back in.” She’s also explored abstraction. She often works on full-sheet (22” x 30”) paper though occasionally half-sheet or quarter sheets seem the appropriate size for particular projects. A recently completed painting of a woman is on a quarter-sheet and pinned to a black felt board in Kathy’s living room (pictured right).
Kathy uses that black background when she photographs her work. She’s meticulous in documenting her work and good quality photos are a must-have when it comes to online marketing, something Kathy is aggressively pursuing.
For four years, Kathy and Jim, explored the highways and bi-ways of Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota and Wisconsin, attending outdoor art fairs. Though the experience taught her much about the art world from the perspective of an artist, from what other artists were doing and from what art buyers were attracted to, she harbored no affection for being at the mercy of the weather. “The rain, humidity and sun damaged paintings. At one show near a lake, male mosquitoes came out and crawled into everything.”
The changing economy of the first decade of the 21st century challenged artist’s livelihoods with dipping sales at art shows and festivals. Though the concept of starving artists may be familiar and the idea that artists create for the satisfaction of self-expression is commonly held, unless supported by a generous patron, an artist must sell their work to continue.
After those four years of putting her work in jeopardy, Kathy opted to nurture her connections with other artists through art organizations and to display her work at the art shows sponsored by those organizations. She is currently a member of ten organizations and has friends all over northern, central and metro Minnesota. She is a signature member of the Red River Watercolor Society. This RRWS status was achieved by being accepted into three national shows within ten years. She has earned four RRWS awards. Her work has been accepted five out of eight times in the juried Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibit earning her a prestigious 3rd place in the watercolor category and two merit awards.
Kathy not only has made valuable connections in the art world, she has a significant presence in the “virtual” online world. Recently, a company from United Kingdom purchased her original “Northern Lights on Superior Shores” for their new branch office in China. A Minnesota poultry company also purchased an original painting of chickens for their corporate office.
Kathy regularly uploads images to her website on Fine Art America where she also maintains a blog and schedule of upcoming shows. Seven of her paintings have been accepted for the Söntés Spring/Summer 2013 show in Rochester, a block and a half from the Mayo Clinic, continuing now through mid-September. May 17-18-19, Kathy will display her work at the Northstar Watermedia Society show “Art on a Line” at the State Fair Fine Art building in St. Paul where she is often a demo artist. If juried into RRWS, the Hjemkomst Gallery in Moorhead will feature her work from mid-June through mid-July. She is part of Ten Brushes, a group of 10 women who gather to learn, critique and display their variety of art in a common theme. They recently exhibited at the Burnsville Performing Arts Center.
Kathy’s work is on display and can be viewed easily by the public in many local establishments in Little Falls and Brainerd and her home gallery.

Last summer I was reviewing the mnartists.org opportunities and came upon this one in Rochester. I applied for Fall / Winter but they liked and wanted my work instead for Spring / Summer 2013.

March 25 – September 14, 2013
Opening Reception Sunday, April 14, 2013 2 pm – 5 pm
Meet twelve regional artists.
Downtown Rochester, MN

I think this is a great way to see how today’s art can update a building and connect people.
Söntés is a large fine dining restaurant located in downtown Rochester about 1.5 blocks from the Mayo Clinic. International & USA travelers, businessmen, Mayo Clinic professionals and Rochester residents enjoy the facility. Also meetings are held there for organizations. There is lots of great comfortable seating.
Perhaps you would like to see this historic space and enjoy the reception?

I will have 7 pieces on display and was asked to bring an additional 4 back-up paintings.
A brochure advertises the reception.
Söntés is usually closed on Sunday, so the whole place will be open to the reception festivities and viewing of the art.

Check the internet for more info, address and directions. It is easy to find off the freeway.
I really would like to move this invite around so people who might like to come would be aware of the festivity. I would love folks who desire art to come too. Wouldn’t that be a treat!

Please share.

Kathy Braud

November Art Crawl 2012

Hi there, I participated in an art crawl in a large city in Central MN.
I was able to display my work well as the lovely Falcon National Bank site allowed my work to not only be in stands, but I could also stand it behind me next to the walls in two layers so the images could be seen without much effort from the art crawlers.
A news photographer came along and included my art site as a place to take photos of the activity and visitors.
The next morning, my sister called and said I had made the front of the Inside edition of the local newspaper!
Here is the scanned St. Cloud Times newspaper photo.

FrameWorks is proud to present the six week show, "Path of Light," featuring the "Ten Brushes" artists who are a group of women who paint in watermedia and through meetings and critiques they challenge and encourage each other towards artistic growth.
Over the past several months the women set a goal to create paintings that depict a "Path of Light" either literally or figuratively.
I am one of ten artists and our Ten Brushes members are: Lisa Fertig, Barbara Duffy, Patty Healy, Marilyn Jacobson, Barbara Parisien, Kathy Braud, Deb Magglessen, Wendy Westlake, Leny Wendel, Heidi Nelson.

It will feature paintings with a Path of Light.
I will post an event blurb soon.

I worked with a path of light on this piece also. Wonderful texture was created with drips and sprays of water and the use of gauze. Using different kinds of watercolor paper for the paintings also can help me challenge myself as I find they all react differently.

This November, Heading Home Anoka's efforts to increase awareness of homelessness will feature an Art Expo, "Homelessness ....the Journey." Artists will be using 2D and 3D art to represent the journey thru homelessness including videos, film and slideshows.

The art projects will be on display at various locations -
(Anoka County public libraries (9), Anoka County Government Center Atrium, Sanhill Center for the Arts, and other sites) during the month of November 2011 in an effort to heighten awareness of homelessness.
This is a brainstorming effort to have individuals be able to tell their stories through works of art.

My northern suburb artist group, Artist del Norte, is participating in this awareness project by displaying art in the Homelessness Art Expo. My piece is called,"In These Times".

From 2009 to 2011 the number of homeless people in Anoka County has grown by 45% with a startling increase of almost 100% homeless youth.

Many agencies are looking for help with funds or volunteer help.

It's almost time to turn our paintings in to the Juried 2011 Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Exhibit.

This chicken painting is my choice for this year's submission and it will still have to pass the test yet of the judge jurying the choices within the watercolor cathegory. I chose this painting because it is very strong in values, has a variety of shapes, has color relationships, and can be seen from a long distance away.

In the past, I have been a successful entrant and find that it is so fun to have art on display for anyone in the whole state to see when they visit the Fine Art Building. The display offers great lighting on the paintings and, to those who enter here, the building offers shade and coolness.

On February 21, 2011, Lakeland Public Television for “Common Ground” came to Little Falls.
Steve McKnight, Legacy Producer/Director, came to visit with me on a snowy winter day.

He videoed me painting, doing a Elegent pen demo, showing and talking about art and watercolor paintings.
Maybe this video will be ready to be aired in May 2011 on the show Common Ground after it is edited.
He was here about 2 hours and made me feel fairly comfortable in front of a camera.

NSW Artists for Abundance 2011 Judged Spring Mini Show and Fundraiser to support the Food Shelf

I was among 50 artists who participated in this event combining art and raising money and food donations for the food shelf. Small mini paintings were on display at the Susan Fryer Voigt Gallery, Dock 5, Northrup King Building, NE Minneapolis for this 3 day event March 3 -5 2011.
I had painted a small still-life of apples in a bowl. Kind of fun.

40th Minnesota State Area Invitational Art Show March 1 – 30, 2011

Waage Art Center, Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Fergus Falls Campus,

Juror – Marilyn Hughey Phillis(AWS,NWS) Around May 1, 2011 we will be notified and know our status of acceptance.
While I am already a signiture member of the RRWS, it is fun to enter the show and possibly receive a nice price award. At the RRWS reception, it is also fun to visit with the many artists we also know from all parts of the country.

VAM Mail Art St. Cloud, MN

Visual Arts Minnesota had a Mail Call for donated art to increase the support of their satellite galleries. A fall 2011 auction is planned to sell the pieces. The art had to be unframed, fit in a small envelope and be mailed. I submitted “Tiny Gem,” a 5x7 mixed media painting in mid February. It also has a presence in an online VAM gallery.

GRAA 10x10 Show A Celebration of Art and Community

Displayed in the Front Window Salon Gallery at GRAA
This show is in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of occupying the “new” building.
122 SE First Street, in Historic Downtown Little Falls.

The pieces will be sold as a fundraiser for the GRAA non-profit organization.
What? 2 D original pieces of art, 10 x 10 inches or cm not matted.
All mediums accepted. It can be wild!

The Art is considered a donation and will be sold for $20.11 each. (the year 2011 - get the pun?)
Art will be displayed in April and be ready for the evening Party for the Arts,
Saturday, April 30 - which is a major fund raiser for the organization. It will remain on display and be for sale all of the month of May.

Shhhhhhh - Some secrecy here -
No signing on the front of the painting – so it can be hung anonymously.
Once purchased, the artist will be identified on the exhibit listing, and on the website.
I contributed 20 paintings 10 x 10 cm or 10 x 10 inches.
A reasonable mat and frame package has been put together also to help get these little original artworks up on your walls.

NSW Spring Workshop with Sterling Edwards. April 25 – 29, 2011

I am taking this wonderful Northstar Watercolor Society watercolor workshop right after Easter Sunday.
It will be held at the Susan F Voigt Gallery, Dock 5, Northrup King Building, NE Mpls. MN
9:00 am – 4:00 pm for 5 days. I will stay in the cities and not commute home (100 miles away).

Google Sterling Edwards and see the quality of his artworks.
What is a workshop like?
It has an intense creative art feeling we all get caught up in – like an “art storm” activity. We get so tired from the bursts of energy by the end of the week.

My workshop grant - "This project was made possible by a grant provided by the Five Wings Arts Council with funds from the McKnight Foundation."

Fred Sommers Mini workshop Saturday, March 26, 2011

I Participated in this Central Minnesota Watercolor (CMW) club short workshop activity
9 – 3 pm Held at Atonement Lutheran Church
$75 fee/person and included many materials.

Fred was a good teacher and had a lot of useful information to share and help us use and manipulate this dry pastel pigments to enhance our watercolors - if we so choose.
I know more now about pastels then I did before!

Rotating Art Show

My art club, Artist del Norte, in the Blaine- Coon Rapids area
has a unique method of getting art out amongst the people.
They have a rotating art show that has been in existence for a long time.

Businesses sign up for a year for a fee and get a tax deduction, and artists sign up for a fee to provide original works to the walls. It’s a win –win situation.
The earnings help the AdN group to provide funds for demo’s and other services for the members. They are always searching for new clients to service with art and new artists to display and hopefully sell some artwork.
The amount of art we hang depends on the amount of wall openings at the business.

Rotating Art Show for 1st Qtr Jan – Feb - Mar
I had 12 paintings at the Anoka County Government Center, County Attorney Office.

Rotating Art Show for 2nd Qtr Apr – May - Jun
State Farm Insurance - 1
Channel 15 – Blaine - 5

Kathy Braud Watercolor Exhibit
Local Blend Coffeehouse and Wine Bar in St. Joseph, MN.
April and May Exhibition

Stacie and Jeff Engholm – owners
19 W. Minnesota St., St. Joseph, MN 56374 telephone 320-363-1011

This business in an old fashioned building is a great place to enjoy a good cup of coffee and pastry.
I was taken with the high ceilings covered with tin type designs and the big open walls waiting to display large paintings.
The wood bar, booths, old wide moldings and decor provide character too.
I can see why the college students want to hang out here.
While we hung the art exhibit, our noses were assaulted with the good smells of fresh bakery and strong coffees. But by mid morning, we did enjoy our breakfast. I understand they have organic foods and can serve vegetarian dishes also.

The Local Blend is located close to 2 colleges, St. Benedicts and St. John’s, just off of I-94. Jazz music is performed live at the Local Blend Coffee shop by the fireplace 1 – 2 times per week in the evenings.

The owners are great people. Stacie is so energetic and such a vital part of running the daily activities. Her laugh is wonderful! Jeff is a musician, composer, and educator and truly enjoys the stress release of music in his day.
I hope someday you get to enjoy this wonderful shop while my art is still on display!

Kathy Thoughts on an Art Life Nov - Dec 2010

11-19-10 I joined FAA just a couple days ago and now I am now able to move about in this virtual gallery. I am still learning so much everyday.
I received my check for my Five Wings Arts Council Individiual Art Grant Award yesterday. It is so appreciated! I am so grateful and thankful. The funds are earmarked and some will be used for furthering my art education in a spring workshop. Kathy

Saturday - It's a Busy art day today.

We were up for an early drive to St. Cloud to the Paramount Arts District to retrieve my Central Minnesota Watercolorists Member Show paintings around 10 am. Then I and my husband moved on to the cities to pick up art at Century College, White Bear Lake, at the end of a big Fall Exhibition for the Northstar Watercolor Society by 12 noon.
This trip is 100+ miles one way from our home town.
It's always a pleasure to see my art friends at any gathering.

From 2-5pm the Elk River Arts Alliance Main Gallery, Elk River, hosted a delightful reception for their Holiday Show and Sale. Such variety in paintings and medias and jewelry, fiber art, glass, wood, pottery and metal. There was even more choices I didn't name. The food was good too!
The gallery is open for the rest of the holiday season till Dec. 24.
Shoppers were coming to meet the artists and choose one-of-a-kind art creations.
I smoozed, had a great time and even enjoyed making a sale to a happy customer who likes MY art. I wish you well in your life with art! kathy

I can't believe winter is here again!
We have a coating as thick as a grapefruit peel (up to 1/2 inch) over all the driveway surfaces, the car windows, and covering the bushes to name a few. My walk to the car was a slow slippery shuffle.
The cars in motion are not used to winter driving anymore and I see they are over-estimating their stopping power.
So .... we holed up today and hibernated in the warmth of the house and I have added 3 new paintings to my new galleries. I concentrated on my current paintings which had been in art shows in 2010.
Do expect more paintings to show up in this Recent Exhibition Gallery site as I am an active artist who participates in many events throughout the state. Perhaps you will enjoy these selections which were displayed to the public during this year 2010. kathy

11-22-2010 2 pm.
Ok, now the snow is really covering up the slippery ice!

Last night I felt really creative in the later hours of the evening. Peeked through some returned art that I have not been able to touch for awhile and made decisions to revise this piece and that. My painting abilities are stronger and broader then in the past. So from 10 pm - 2 am, I was having fun painting!

What did I do to them? Sometimes they were exposed to more inside light with no UV protection, so the pigment colors were not as strong as I liked anymore. As I reveiwed the winter landscape last night, I recognized the original birch tree shapes were whimmpy (but they were like the original reference material) and so using an Elegent Ink Calligraphy pen, I changed the entire grouping to become stronger and have larger trunks and birch tree bark activity. It was worth the effort!
Fear not! It is easier to make changes with your art when you get to that "I don't care" feeling then it is to go that last mile the first time. Plug on! yours in art, Kathy

11-28-10 9 pm

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend has filled my soul with happiness and joy of being with family and feeling relief of not having to cook and clean up like that on a daily basis.
Now I will have time to jump in and paint again.

I belong to a group of artists who are sharing a common painting challenge and then commenting to each other on suggestions to each other's paintings. We will have our work exposed to the eye of others in it's young stages. That is slightly frightening. The paintings will evolve. We will grow. I hope to get my brush wet tomorrow and join those who are already making strides in understanding the media and the December challenge.

12-2-10
Time is moving on and we are in the 12th month of the year 2010 already.

Our city is home to the Great River Arts Association.
I am part of the Visual Arts Board and our meeting was last evening. It's time for the new employees to the center to now take charge and send us in new direction - of growth and support to our community and our organization. If only I knew more to be of help ..... the apex time ....

How do you incorporate the arts and all it's richness into the lives of folks just trying to survive? Winter adds early darkness, unreliable temperatures & weather, and more time to spare. Job situations of most of the folks in the area restrict them from doing little beyond necessary. My heart is heavy at this instant but I have hope we can make a difference to the youth. We just need to find the key.

12-3-10
Another snow storm is now collecting and sending us this evening into our warm little homes.

I am considering entering a local art show contest with the topic theme, Strut your Stuff.
How am I to depict this to be inclusive? Boys and girls. The best art chosen must also be suitable for the promotional material for the event. Now I will need to think like a graphic artist. No backgrounds are needed. Posters need white space.
Hummmmm, Roosters come to mind! They are very good at preening themselves and making a great presentation to a mixed sex group.
Country western and down home on the farm flavor was also mentioned when considering the basic theme.
I can see a fiddler figure, fingers flying on the strings, bow bent to the beat, farmer hat, comfortable overhauls, plaid shirt sitting perched on a straw bale. Hummmmm.
Or a boy and girl dancing, braids flying, twirling or holding on to each other by one hand - dressed country western.
Or a mother duck with a line of baby ducklings. Hummmm
Then again, Roosters really are colorful and I do love making chicken and rooster paintings. I'll probably just mess with that idea some more.

December 8, 2010
Where are the days disappearing?

Well, It has been an exciting week! I got a telephone call informing me that my work had been chosen for the Best of Show award at the Winter in Minnesota Show, Blaine, MN. That's good! Then we can plan to come down to the awards event and make arrangements .... 100 miles one way. We have family, local to that area, so can enjoy time with them too.

Blaine hosted a very active activity on the awards night that included all three generations in surprising numbers involved in active games, art activities, Santa encounters, a hay ride, s'moores at a bonfire and more. We were impressed.

I did work with my chicken references mentioned earlier in the week and was able to identify quite a variety of poses and cropped them out for use. I found my newsprint and charcoal and made a mess of black dust and smear - but I now have a couple of 18 x 24 fast drawings to consider. I might get this done yet!

I belong to a Homemakers group and have stayed put in one place in this community for years.
We have been around each other through most of our lives and raising children or getting old.

We are having a Christmas party tomorrow and I will bring my potluck dish, Swedish Kringler, for dessert. It's kind of a baked almond flavored custard on a crust, has minimal ingredients and it tastes best fresh - so that means an early morning. Just like art, this cooking and baking treat is done in stages and can be very artfully arranged with frosting, nuts, and flavorings. I also have an original painting that will go to my secret pal.... hot off the press. I hope she likes it. Her bio said she loves poppies and so do I.
Best wishes to each of you reading this - to enjoy each day to the fullest! Love, kathy

12-9-10
Sunshine today!

The Christmas party was great. We also had a club fundraiser activity. Everyone brought a gentlely used or new item to silent auction off on tables to the side of the room. Fresh baked goods and candy went well too. Participants used "their number" (private) to submit a bid and a timer ended the sale. Some items had many bids, others not so many, but all were sold. We were pleased with the income activity. I had brought Cranberry Orange Nut Bread cut in 4 slices to a plate so the colorful bread was displayed. I think the ladies were just buying a taste of good food ... something like they used to make for the holidays. I was the highest bidder for a whole variety of holiday cookies and fudge. Won't have to bake much this year!

12-13-2010
The Twin Cities is recovering from 17.5 inches of snow over the weekend. Just very cold in our area.

I attended the CMW meeting, Central Minnesota Watercolorists, tonight in St. Cloud 30 miles south of me. It was our Christmas Party and a chance to view the CD show of the 2010 the National Show of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA).
Central MN artists gather from 30 miles in all directions to share, put on art shows, education opportunities and fellowship.
Advertising is a cooperative effort for our fall show. We talked about new projects coming this year too.
Groups give you a sense of belonging. I have been a board member also. Nothing like being in the heat of the action.... but it sure wears you out!

12-14-2010
You get a Weather report everyday - so we can appreciate when it starts to warm up again. The temps were low, just above zero with blue sky and some clouds. Last night the sky was clear, stars and a halo ring of light around the moon.

I have been working on drawing chickens lately. It is subject matter mentioned earlier in this blog.
After I have my rendition decided, I hang the drawing in my big dining window in the kitchen and let the bright afternoon sun turn this area into a big light box. The drawing will come right thru a sheet of watercolor paper put on top of the prep drawing.
Sometimes I have to make the lines bolder to see the image. The window is kind of cold to work on too.
Now with it getting dark earlier in the day, 3:30 pm is almost the end of using this light box - as the sun goes behind the trees and turns out the bright lights needed to see through 140lb. paper.

12-15-2010
Half way through December today.

I am bogged down with learning new technology. Facebook, linking, likes, etc. It takes sooooo much time to get lined up and running. I think my wheels are spinning but I am not going anywhere. A great gal from Australia befriended me and I hope to learn something from her. I figure she is sleeping when I am up, so our schedules are probably half a world apart.
Today I painted chickens.
Colored ones are more fun.... so they have rust, golds, greens and blues in them. Will probably continue the experience but need to get more drawings ready on the paper. I was getting kind of picky on my sketching yesterday and I think I will do more decisions with a brush and less a with pencil.

12-17-2010
Friday

I have enlisted help from a knowledgeable friend. Perhaps I will be able to solve my technical problems and learn some new tricks! I have hope today.....
5 chicken paintings are waiting to be delivered for consideration - oops, just remembered I need to take their photos so it is reflected for my bookwork. Some will make cute chicken art cards. kathy

12-20-10 Monday 10:30 pm

It's Christmas week and it is snowing and making the world white. I'm sure we now have 5 inches new snow on the ground.
I did finishing touches on another rooster this am, took good reference photos, recorded the name and number and got my last entry delivered for the contest. Lots to remember, to do a good job of referencing.

It's possible I might be able to work on a larger painting tomorrow with a tropical subject..... A fisherman and large salt water fish. Won't that be fun to depart from this frozen countryside for a few hours in my mind? I'll just crank up the house thermostat and turn on the kitchen fireplace and pretty soon, I'll just get lost on ocean waters and rocking on a boat in my steamy kitchen. Peace and love, Kathy

12/23/10

Yes, my tropical painting is 75% done! I am making an effort to reduce my use of pure colors everywhere and introduce more grayed compliments. The end result is to have a more vibrant center of interest.

Good News here today! My last chicken painting submitted to the Boys and Girls Club contest was selected to be the winner of the contest. Someday I may figure out how to add a rooster pic for you to see in this blog.
It's a good cause and I am sure I will be giving them more art for auction use.

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. I wish you well, peace in your heart, happiness, and love. yours, Kathy

12-30-2010
It's raining today! We have snowbanks, snow on the roofs, and this is putting heavy moisture all over everything. Be careful to all who have to drive for New Years Eve time with unclimate weather conditions!
I am safe at home, will burrow out soon and wrap up some art to do ends. I did just joined a FAA contest. Learned some more about navigating the site and am stopping to write comments on the paintings I like.
Happy New Year to you, my friend!
